Soundboard and Bridges

Most of the soundboard that we restore in our facility are the original soundboards that we dry to foreshadow any future cracks that could eventually turn up and then shim all the cracks in the soundboard. Alternatively, if we see that the soundboard is not original and was already exchanged in the 30, 80 or 120 years of its lifespan we also install new soundboards either from the Canadian Manufacturer Bolduc or the German Manufacturer Strunz in the instruments.

Soundboard and Bridges

First the original notching and bridge pin holes are copied to template. Then all of the bridge pins and the old bridge cap are removed. Then our bridges are recapped with either maple or beech and with the help of the template new bridge pins and notching are done on the bridge.

Harp

The iron frame is sanded to its bare metal core and then refinished to new color luster. During the renovation of the harp new hitch pins and new agraffs from the German company Klinke are installed, the nose bolts and plate bolts are nickel plated for a “as new” look.

Pinblock

After the disassembly of the pianos and taking out of the harp from the piano we can finally see the pinblock. In Steinway instruments we do not exchange the full pinblock but just renovate the original pinblock. The pinblock in not removed from the instrument and just the part of the pinblock where the pins go in is carved out. What is left are the so called “windows” in the pinblock, in those windows we put in new Bolduc pinblock material. When we have instruments with open faced pinblocks which are and were installed by such brands as Bösendorfer or Bechstein we extract the whole pinblock and install a new Bolduc pinblock.

Restringing

After the renovation or exchange of the pinblock, the refinishing of the harp, the works on the soundboard and bridges we install them back into the instrument. When the harp is reinstalled the pinblock is drilled with a specialized drill press.

Restringing

When the harp is reinstalled the pinblock is drilled with a specialized drill press. Then after our craftsmen position jacks under the pinblock and they restring the instruments with the silver strings from Röslau and the bass strings from Heller bass wound around Diamand pins from Klinke or Biene pins from Jahn. After the installation the strings are chipped three times.
